Context Eating addresses the four main triggers that lead to overeating...

Physiological triggers occur because your body requires specific nutrients for optimum health. 
When you are lacking certain nutrients your body will crave things like fat and carbohydrates leading to weight gain. Once your body receives what it needs, the physiological cravings stop. Physiological cravings need to be addressed before you can have longterm success mastering the other triggers. This is why it is on the outside of the circle.

Emotional triggers occur when you have emotional attachments to food. The drive to overeat can be very strong when it fufills an emotional need. Identifying your emotional triggers can help break those attachments so that situational and habitual triggers do not hold the same power.

Situational triggers occur when you are presented with specific situations that are associated with certain foods or food quantities. Identifying these triggers allows you to make informed food decisions.

Habitual triggers are usually unconcious "auto-pilot" reactions. Once you become aware of your habitual triggers you can learn to interupt the pattern to stop the disordered eating. 

 

Context Eating puts food back into its proper context...

In our modern North American society we have decided that food belongs in almost every context...except maybe the bathroom!

We eat in our cars...at our desks...in our beds...on the couch...in front of the TV...while we are waiting...working...traveling...socializing... walking...out running errands...exercicing... shopping ...studying ...reading etc. The list is endless.

This is very different from even a few generations ago where food had very specific contexts. 

When we put food back into its proper context, excess weight can naturally drop off...

 

Context Eating stops defining food as "good" or "bad" and does not focus on a number on the scale...

Defining food as either "good" or "bad" places a moral component on what you are eating that leads to worsening feeling around food.

Looking at an outside number on a scale to determine your health (and worth) leads to disordered eating.

Having an unrealistic goal weight leads to yo-yo dieting..."all or nothing" approaches...temporary results and increased health issues over time.
